Drummer Boy (Ruffed Grouse drumming)

After hearing a grouse drum when I was in the woods I did some searching and after finding the drumming log quite easily I decided to try to photograph the grouse in action (something I've always wanted to do).

This is something male grouse do every spring to try to attract a mate. They brace their tale on the log (which they come back to year after year) and beat their wings in a unique rhythm, creating a unmistakable low thumping sound you may hear when in the woods during spring. However, hearing it and seeing/photographing it are two very different things!

Long story short, I eventually went in one morning and put up a make shift blind. After over 3 hours of waiting, I glanced up from the latest MeatEater vid I was watching and suddenly noticed the grouse was on my camera screen! I quickly took action and was able to watch and photograph this grouse drumming six times before he hoped off into the woods and disappeared.

Overall, I'm super excited that my effort payed off first try and that I was able to watch this fascinating bird behavior!
